NLD My daughter and me
My daughter is 6 yrs. old and was recently dx with NLD. She also has congenital Hypothyroidism, Absence Seizures, possible ADD and PDD. She is so bright and funny! There are days when it is hard and she can get overwhelmed with expectations - even getting dressed in the morning can be a challenge. I help her the best that I can and hope that I don't make too many mistakes along the way. I am very proud of her. She will not give up - she might need to take a break, anywhere from a few minutes to a day - but the more she works at skill building the easier it becomes and before we know it she is doing it on her own. Most of all I want her to know that no matter what she can do we value who she is. I hope that she can look back at her childhood and remember that through the tears of frustration there is unwavering love. Remember the laughs we share, outdoor adventures, the books we've read, dancing, singing, and our goal to never give up. She is strong and has taught me so much. Thank you!

Thanks for the great suggestion!
I just want to say THANK YOU to the person that wrote in about being a medical transcriptionist. You don't "lack compassion" at all, as that doctor said. If you lacked compassion, you wouldn't be offering such a great suggestion to other people who have the same issues that you have. Perhaps it is the "good doctor" who lacked compassion when saying that to you. Compassion is a relative term. Everyone in the medical field seems to think they have it! Not always the case. more...

Middle child
The name I will give is Muse, simply because I dislike giving others my real name and for safety reasons as well I shall leave it out. I am seventeen turning eighteen in December; I was diagnosed with AS just a half year ago. Growing up as the middle child is never fun, my older brother moved away when I was seven making me the oldest of the house but still he left behind records. Let's go a little bit before that though, I think it might make more sense. My mom left my father when I was five, we moved from Alaska down to Florida where she found a boy friend and got together with him. He was kind if not a little strange, but he took care of use and showed use what was different in Florida such as Snakes and Alligators. When I was seven my mother left him for a reason unknown; and for awhile it was just her and my brothers and I. A few months past and she started dating some guy who soon moved in with use, he made houses and used to be in the army. more...

I only found out that my mother and I both had asperger's when I was 57 and she was dying. She did her best to look normal and feel superior all her life, glossing over major gaps in her mothering, etc. Most of my life, if I'd insisted on a diagnosis for myself, it would have been wrong. It is a great relief to finally have some perspective on the family history. more...

Don't know what to do!
Hi - this site has me wondering - I've suspected that my son has Aspbergers'. He has obsessed with subjects and people since he was three. His obsessions went from Nintendo to astrology to chemistry to countries, just to name a few. He's memorized every flag on the planet and knows the periodic table of the elements. He could read at 3 and a half years old, but never learned how to keep a door from hitting him in the face when he walked into a building. I had to teach him how far away to stand during a conversation. He wanted nothing but tuna sandwiches for lunch at school for an entire year. Now he is obsessed with music, namely guitar and writes entire scores on his guitar program. He can play all kinds of instruments.

Are NLD and Aspergers linked?
Dear sir/madam

I I am 35 years old and have had a struggle with so many things all my life. I was refered to a pshcologist a year ago with suspected bi polar disorder but I wasnt convinced and suspected my difficulties to be more like ADHD. My pshycologist has been a fantastic guide and gave me a variety of tests that took place over many sessions. He picked up about my difficulties with spacial awareness and my severe maths problems alongside with impulsivity and attention difficulties. I also explained to him that I have difficulty changing routines and without a routine I can become so disorganised it can be very distructuve to me and my partner. I find slight changes with sometimes the smallest of things difficult to cope with and I find it difficult seeing another persons point of view unless it is on my terms. more...

My Story
I am a 45 year old female. My story is definately weird. I was different all my life. So different, that I have moved from country to country since I was 17 trying to find a land and/or culture that I belonged because I missed so much having friends and family to love me. more...

Not Alone
When I was 8 years, I went to a new school later in the year. I had no friends, and it was difficult for me to understand math and do non-verbal tasks, such as tying my shoes and riding a bike. more...

Magic Potion
My daughter is now 20 and I've been feeling sooooo all alone raising her. I remember one evening I was going to meet with some clients. (we have a home base business). We had had a busy day and were frantically trying to get the house cleaned up while I was putting the finishing touches on the project. more...

My Son
My son is 17 and starting his senior year of high school. He was never "formally" diagnosed with Aspergers or NLD, but I suspect he has a bit of both. We used to tell people he had "an alphabet soup of diagnosis", now, we make it simple and tell them he has Austism Spectrum Disorder. more...

My Story
I don't have AS, but I was diagnosed with a non-verbal learning disability this year, specifically ADD. I'm fourteen years old. For ten years, I suffered psychologically and emotionally because of my odd behavior (hyperactivity, extreme aversion to strangers, weird sense of humor) and seeming inability to do well in school despite my high IQ. My parents would simply push me harder, saying I wasn't applying myself. more...

I am called stupid
All the time when I was young I everybody called me stupid and retarded and so I was stupid and so I was a carpenter until I was 32. I got hurt on the job and had to the on disability. They told me I can work any more as a carpenter I didn't know what I could do I was scared; I didn't pass a grade since second grade. I could not read or write. So I went to a junior collage near my house, to take some class to see if I could do the computer class so I could get a job fixing it. Well that did not happen. I got a F on my first class it was hopeless. The teacher ask me the question on the test with out me knowing it. Then she ask me why it got an f on the test. I didn't want to tell her. After the class I told her I can't read or write. And the rest is history. If you don't believe me. What can I say I still can't but you can look at my website? If it wasn't for computer I be homeless now.

And that's my story My website is www.4ACAD.COM it got my life on it And I hope my spell check work good this time

Thank you so very much!!
Dear Miller, I really appreciate what you're doing with your site! At about 17 I was told I had NLD after going through yet another battery of testing. It actually explained a lot to me about why my mind works so very differently from most people's. Ever since I was little I've felt different somehow but never been able to pin down why exactly. more...

Hello
Hey, just wanted to tell you that I saw your site. I was diagnosed with NLD with Asperger-like traits a year and a half ago when I was thirteen. School has definitely been hell for me and I totally agree with the "taking AS people out of school" thing you wrote. I was in the public school system up until the end of eighth grade and I HATED it. I've been in a private school for this year and I hate that, too. I can't make friends and I'm just an outsider looking in, and it made me miserable. more...

Tommy
My son Tommy has aspergers. He is always full of surprises. One day I decided to check on Tommy because it was taking a long time for him to wash his hands. So I go in the bathroom and find him taking a bath in the sink! This is a small pedestal sink that he squeezed himself into. Tommy loves to play with water.

Shopping
When I was a teenager, I was home sick with Mono. It was a school holiday so my sister with Asperger's got to spent the day at the mall while I was home sick. Shopping is my favorite thing, so I was a little jealous. When she got home, she gave me a gift bag filled with things to make me feel better. She had spent all day going store to store buying things she knew I liked - a stuffed toy, a movie, a get well card and several other items individually wraped and placed in my Get Well bag. THe last thing I had expected was for her to spend all her money on me.

Salesman
My brother is quite the salesman! He loves to talk about cars and everything that's wrong with them...or could potentially go wrong - the stranger the better. He was telling us about how terrible one of our family's vechicles was in an attept to convice our Dad to buy a new vehicle. After listing every problem it had ever had and every problem that could arise in the future, he turned to me and said "Do you want to buy it? It's only $500 and it still works."
